Community Groups:

The Heart of Positive Mental Health in Louth and Meath

Community groups across Louth and Meath play an essential role in supporting the health and wellbeing of everyone who lives here. Every club, organisation, volunteer group, youth service, arts group, sports team, social gathering, and local initiative helps create a stronger, more connected community.

Research and consultation in both counties showed that community spaces are often where people feel supported, included, and able to talk openly about their wellbeing. Even simple actions welcoming new members, checking in on someone, offering a safe space, or creating opportunities to meet others can make a big difference to mental health.

Community groups help people:

  • Connect with others, reducing loneliness and isolation.
  • Stay active, which supports better mental and physical health.
  • Learn new things, building confidence and purpose.
  • Give back, which boosts self-esteem and community pride.
  • Take notice, helping people feel grounded and present.

These everyday contributions as outlined by “5 Ways to Wellbeing“, are powerful. They help prevent mental health difficulties, support early intervention, and strengthen resilience across our towns and villages. Community groups also have deep local knowledge and trusted relationships making them key partners in promoting positive mental health and signposting people to support when they need it.

CommUnity Connect Louth & Meath was created with community groups because their experience, passion, and understanding of local needs are central to improving wellbeing for everyone in Louth and Meath. Whether through organised activities or quiet acts of kindness, community groups are at the heart of a healthier, more connected region.
