Understanding Mental Health and Wellbeing

What does poor mental health look like?

To determine if you have poor mental health, consider the following signs and symptoms.

Stress

Stress is your body’s natural reaction to pressure, change, or challenge — a built-in survival response that affects both your mind and body. It can be helpful in small doses, but too much stress over time can impact your mood, sleep, energy, and overall health.

Stress can cause you to:

  • feel overwhelmed (feeling that everything is too much)
  • find it hard to concentrate
  • be irritable
  • feel anxious, worried or scared all the time
  • be forgetful
  • lack self-confidence
  • feel tired all the time or have sleep problems
  • avoid certain places or people
  • eat less or more than usual
  • drink alcohol or smoke more than usual

Physical signs of stress can include:

  • increased heart rate
  • increased breathing rate
  • high blood pressure
  • a high metabolism (burning calories at a faster rate)

Anxiety

Anxiety is a natural human response to feeling threatened, stressed, or uncertain — but it becomes a problem when the worry is intense, persistent, or hard to control. Everyone feels anxious sometimes, but anxiety disorders involve fear or worry that is excessive, long-lasting, and interferes with daily life.

Low Mood

Low mood is a state of feeling down, sad, or emotionally flat, often for a short period of time. It’s something everyone experiences occasionally, and it doesn’t automatically mean depression – though persistent low mood can be a sign that someone needs more support.

Loneliness

Loneliness is the feeling of being disconnected from others, even when people are physically around you. It’s not just about being alone – it’s about not feeling seen, understood, or emotionally supported.

It’s a deeply human experience, and everyone goes through it at some point.

Burnout

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by long-term, unmanaged stress – most commonly from work, but it can also come from caregiving, school, or other responsibilities.

Consist of symptoms like exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed, loss of motivation, fatigue, sleep problems.

Emotional Stress

Emotional stress is the kind of stress that comes specifically from strong emotions–like fear, anger, sadness, frustration, or grief–becoming overwhelming and interfering with your ability to cope or function. It’s a normal human experience, but when it builds up or lasts too long, it can affect your body, mood, and behaviour.
